DAVE WYATT’S LOST LAUGHS
Time:
11.00am

Lost Laughs

A rare opportunity to see newly restored, recently discovered and long unseen comedy shorts. Perhaps the best of Chaplin's Keystones (restored this year by the Chaplin Project); the premiere of YOUR OWN BACK YARD (1925) -a long lost Our Gang comedy and favourite of their producer Hal Roach; a recently restored early Keystone Chaplin short BETWEEN SHOWERS*; an amazing 1907 trick comedy from France TONTOLINI STEALS A BICYCLE; Charley Chase in a recently found rarity ONE MAMMA MAN (1927) and Buster Keaton in two previously unknown appearances - one incredibly co-starring Harold Lloyd, Arbuckle, Jackie Coogan - even Rudolph Valentino!  With live piano accompaniment by Neil Brand.

* New print restored at the bfi National Film and Television Archive in association with Cineteca di Bologna and Lobster Films.

CINEKIDS: SLAPSTICK
Time: 1.00pm

Running time: 2hrs 30mins

Cinekids is Watershed's monthly event for 8-12 year olds. As part of Slapstick, there will be a fun-filled workshop with Tony Orrell, percussionist and filmmaker, focusing on the use of sound and music in slapstick comedy. We will be watching some slapstick films and the children will get the chance to compose their own soundtrack to a silent film and perform it live.

Fee: £2.00 per child (accompanying adults free). Advance booking is recommended as places on the workshop are limited.

To be kept informed about future Cinekids events please email kids@watershed.co.uk stating your children's date of birth.

Perhaps one of the most recognisable images from cinema history is of the young bespectacled Lloyd suspended from the face of an enormous clock atop a skyscraper. But what more do we know about him? What made Lloyd the biggest box office clown of the twenties and how did he create those extraordinary stunts? Paul Merton takes us on a journey of discovery as we look at the life and work of the often overlooked 'third genius' of silent comedy. Plus a complete screening of Harold Lloyd’s classic thrill picture NEVER WEAKEN (1921) featuring the world premiere of Neil Brand's newly commissioned score.

Please note: This event will be recorded by the BBC for 'Paul Merton's Silent Clowns'.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY PEGGY?
Time: 4.00pm

Captain January

The answer to the question is that the most famous female child star of the 1920s has today become one of the best writers on silent Hollywood, Diana Serra Cary. We are delighted to welcome her to Watershed where on stage she discusses her career with film historian David Robinson.  With film extracts plus a complete screening of CAPTAIN JANUARY (1924), the story of an orphan raised by a gruff old lighthouse keeper, later remade with Shirley Temple in the original Baby Peggy role. Plus an opportunity to ask  a real Hollywood screen legend questions. With live musical accompaniment by Neil Brand on piano and Gunter Buchwald on violin.

Seven Chances

To inherit $7 million Buster has to be married before 7pm on his 27th birthday. Having wrecked every chance with his fiancee, he advertises for a wife -and ends up pursued by hundreds of prospective brides. From the opening gag in 2 colour Technicolor to the famous chase climax with our hero dodging an (unscripted) avalanche of rocks, there are stunning images throughout. With live musical accompaniment by members of the Prima Vista Social Club and introduced by Paul Merton. Plus Laurel and Hardy’s classic short ANGORA LOVE. £8/£6
