Paul Merton returned as the inimitable host of Slapstick, and was joined by a wealth of special guests including comedians Graeme Garden and Tim Brooke-Taylor (The Goodies), musician and humorist Neil Innes, Peter Lord from Aardman Animations, celebrated pianist and composer Neil Brand, silent screen star Jean Darling (Our Gang), film historian David Robinson and TV presenter Chris Serle.
Unmissable highlights of this year’s programme included the Silent Comedy Extravaganza that received a 5-star review from the Evening Post. The evening featured Buster Keaton's Steamboat Bill Jr; a spectacular evening of music, entertainment and laughter which brought the house down at Colston Hall. The event was a sell out - with audience figures of 1500 (up from 1000 in 2006 and 699 in 2005) - a testiment to the growing popularity of this festival.
At Arnolfini, Harold Lloyd starred in one of his most accomplished features, Kid Brother, with special live musical accompaniment by Neil Brand and Gunter Buchwald on Sat 13 Jan. On Sun 14 Jan, at Watershed, Desert Island Slapstick, provided a one-off opportunity to see a panel of celebrity silent film fans, including Paul Merton, Jean Darling, Neil Innes and Richard Williams (the celebrated animator), choose their most cherished slapstick moments.
Paul Merton, Slapstick 2007 host, said: “The response to the festival gets better and better every year, and the live audience love it and help to bring the comedies back to life."
In other reviews, Slapstick has received an equally positive response, with Moving Image journal Film Intelligence hailing Slapstick 2007 "a real presence on the international scene."
