Keaton always selected Battling Butler (1926) as one of his favourite features. Based on the Broadway play, the story revolves around two Alfred Butlers – one (Keaton) a mild-mannered millionaire, the other a boxing world champion. When Butler-the-fop finds love with a mountain girl, he assumes the identity and arouses the wrath of Butler-the-Brute, leading to a dramatic showdown which inspired Scorsese’s filming of Raging Bull. Introduced here by film editor and PhD student of Keaton’s film-making, Polly Rose (University of Bristol). With live accompaniment by Günter A Buchwald and Frank Bockius.
